EMG stands for Electromyography. It is a diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity produced by muscles. During an EMG, small electrodes are inserted into the muscles being examined, and the electrical signals generated by muscle cells are recorded. This test helps assess the health of muscles and the nerves controlling them. EMG is often performed in conjunction with nerve conduction studies to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the muscular and nervous systems. It is commonly used to diagnose conditions such as muscle disorders, nerve disorders, and neuromuscular junction disorders.
The nerve conduction study is a diagnostic test designed to assess the functionality of muscles and nerves. NCV (Nerve Conduction Velocity) testing is commonly employed in conjunction with an EMG to pinpoint the location and assess the severity of an injury. During the study, a stimulator is utilized to send an electrical impulse, stimulating the nerve, and the resulting response is recorded and analyzed by the diagnostician.
